Want to do something
about climate change?

Keep up-to-date with our campaigns, advocacy, projects and climate action.

Our vision is for the beautiful Hope Valley to be a great place to live, work and visit due to the integrated systems of high quality public transport, linked to excellent walking and cycling routes and shared electric cars and bikes. Our roads will be safer and quieter; residents and visitors will be healthier and nature will flourish as low-emission and active travel options have become the norm.

Travelling Light is the sustainable travel action group of Hope Valley Climate Action, working to make low-carbon travel the natural choice for journeys in and around the Hope Valley.

Our vision is for the Hope Valley to be a healthier, better-connected place to live, work, and visit, with high-quality public transport, quieter roads, safer walking and cycling routes, shared electric travel, and thriving local communities. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting active travel, we can improve wellbeing, cut emissions, and help nature flourish.

People are at the heart of Travelling Light. We work with residents, volunteers, local groups, transport providers, and regional partners to develop practical projects that create lasting change. Whether you want to discover local projects, volunteer your time, or take your own climate action, we’d love you to get involved.

Our work centres on four key areas:

  • Inclusive active travel
Making walking, wheeling and cycling safer, easier, and more accessible for everyone.
  • Integrated public transport
Supporting joined-up, reliable and user-friendly transport options within and beyond the valley.
  • Reduced fossil fuel dependency
Encouraging shared, electric and lower-carbon alternatives to private car use.
  • Innovation and spreading change
Developing new ideas, supporting community action and sharing learning with other rural areas.

Our Current Projects

Move More Hope Valley

We have received support from High Peak Borough Council to deliver Move More Hope Valley—an exciting new initiative designed to encourage and support residents and visitors to make more everyday journeys on foot, by bike, or via public transport.

Our aim is to better understand local needs, explore opportunities, and inspire sustainable travel choices that benefit health, wellbeing, and the environment.

We have delivered the first Hope Valley Art Trail by Rail event, led Walker Leader Training, and formed the Hope Valley Bike Collective!

Mini Switzerland in the Peak District

In early April 2026 the Department for Transport announced £6 million in national funding to support the delivery of the Mini Switzerland in the Hope Valley demonstrator project, with additional funding to be provided by EMCCA through its Transport for City Regions settlement. Led by Mayor Claire Ward, EMCCA will oversee delivery of the project in partnership with local stakeholders, operators and community organisations.

The project will deliver:

  • Regular bus services built around an easy-to-understand “clock face” timetable
  • Guaranteed connections between buses and trains
  • Simpler tickets that work across bus and rail operators
  • Better access to jobs, education and healthcare
  • A realistic alternative to driving for visitors to the Peak District

Art Trail by Rail 2026

This year the Hope Valley Art Trail by Rail takes place 26-27 September  Applications are open for Artist until 30 June 2026.

This is a unique event to the area and celebrates local creativity and sustainable travel. Everyone will be invited to travel on the Hope Valley railway line and hop on and off to explore local creativity village by village. Artists will be opening their studios, gardens and exhibiting in villages where you can buy local handmade gifts, get hands on in creative workshops and enjoy some local refreshments and entertainment along the way.

Hope Valley Bike Collective

In response to local feedback around inclusive bike groups and cycling skills, the Hope Valley Bike Collective was established in the summer of 2025.

By creating new opportunities to bring people together, building confidence in cycle skills we can increase awareness of different modes of travel in the area and make cycling accessible, fun and more of the everyday norm.

Everyone is welcome to join. You can get involved by attending our monthly ride, supporting events, raising awareness or sharing your experiences.

S33 Car club

The S33 Car Club aims to help drivers get where they need to go without the cost and hassle of owning a vehicle.

If you are a driver who either:

  • has, or is thinking about getting, a second car;
  • doesn’t own a car but who occasionally needs one to reach certain places,
  • wants to reduce costs or generate a modest income, or
  • wants to reduce your environmental impact

then this scheme will be of particular interest to you!
