New Trustees Needed

HVCA needs more people to serve as trustees!  Please consider putting your name forward.

The organisation

Hope Valley Climate Action is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation [CIO], based in the Hope Valley in the Derbyshire Peak District.  Our objects are:

The promotion, for the benefit of the public, of the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment, in particular by:

1) raising awareness of the causes and impact of climate change;

2) encouraging practical steps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change;

3) promoting research for the public benefit in all aspects of climate change and publishing the results.

We were founded in 2019, and became a CIO in 2020.  Since then we have grown to have a turnover of ~£100K annually, and a supporter list of more than 1000 people.  More information about us and our activities can be found on the website at .

HVCA is governed by a Board of Trustees.  Their job is to:

  • Co-ordinate HVCA’s work, ensuring excellent communication between all those involved
  • Ensure that the resources of HVCA [ideas, projects, communications, people, money] are applied to achieve our objectives to best effect.
  • Grow the number of supporters, and the influence of HVCA
  • Communicate with members, listening to their views and encouraging them to engage
  • Foster and support village groups and action groups
  • Arrange regular general meetings or gatherings of members, enabling members to shape the direction of HVCA
  • Ensure the proper governance of the organisation, including meeting all legal requirements, and reporting as required to the Charity Commission.

The Trustee Board currently meets on alternate months, usually for two hours in an evening.  In addition to the Board, there are three formal subcommittees: Executive and Finance; Policy and Advocacy; and Communications and Engagement.  Trustees are asked to join one or more of these.

Trustees are not paid, but may claim expenses.

The person

We are looking for people who are committed to tackling climate change and support the objectives of HVCA.  Living in the Hope Valley would be an advantage, though it is not essential.  (However, Trustees would be expected to attend Board meetings in person.)  At present, in order to pursue our intention of being a diverse Board, we would particularly welcome interest from younger men.  We want trustees who can contribute diverse work and life experience, and who can give one day per month to HVCA activities.  Previous experience of being a charity Trustee is not necessary.

The process

If you are interested, please write to HVCA’s current chair, Jeremy Wight at, setting out briefly why you would like to be a trustee and what you could contribute.  Please also contact Jeremy if you would like an informal discussion about what’s involved.
