Open Eco Homes Week 10-18 September 2022
With the Government target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and its publicly stated its aim to get as many homes as possible to EPC Band C by 2035, HVCA’s Energy Group has organised an Open Eco Homes Week to provide advice and encouragement to Valley folk who want to make energy-saving improvements to their houses and reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills.
Retro-fitting existing homes in the Peak District to the high performance standards we are going to need if we are to reach net zero is not an easy task. There are technical issues as well as financial costs. Most people appreciate the need to insulate their homes but are discouraged by the cost and disruption.
That’s why it’s so important to encourage people to consider seriously what to do in their own homes and how to do it by providing examples of what we’ve done in our homes. Showing people what can be done is so powerful. We will explain how we went about upgrading our homes, what worked and what we’d do differently and answering their questions. We know this is useful and motivational.
After all, a live visit is worth a thousand Google searches, which is why we want to bring together local people to share their experience of what works well, what are the highs and lows of adapting a home for the zero carbon future, and how much it all costs and saves.
This event has been absolutely excellent. I have visited two homes with different friends and the owners have been exceptionally hospitable, helpful and generous with their time and expertise. It has been the best possible learning experience. I also came to the panel event in Bamford, which was highly informative. Thank you very much Hope Valley Climate Action for once again, organising such a timely, educational and inspiring event.
