Bike Collective – Seed Cycle
Hope Valley Climate Action is teaming up with the National Trust community growing project this Autumn for a tree seed collection by bike.
Starting and finishing at Fairholmes car park, we will be heading out together for a social cycle of around 9 miles in total with a halfway stop to collect different tree seed species. We’re particularly on the hunt for alder seed which should be ripe for picking at this time of year. We’ll spend around 40-45 minutes collecting seeds before cycling back the same way. For those who fancy a slightly longer ride, there’s also the option to complete the reservoir loop, adding around 2 miles.
This is an informal, self-guided social cycle rather than a formally led ride. Participants are responsible for their own cycling, safety and suitability for the route, and should be confident riding the planned distance and type of terrain. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. As part of the event we will be collecting seeds in a wooded area. Please note:
- The woods are accessed by climbing over a low stile. It can be seen on Google Maps here.
- The ground in the woods is slopey, undulating, sometimes steep.
- The paths within the woods are used infrequently, they are narrow, uneven and rough underfoot. They are likely to be slippery if the weather has been wet.
- Be prepared with good footwear – boots or sturdy shoes are highly recommended
The National Trust community growing project aims to bring people together in the local area to collect seeds, prepare and grow saplings and help restore local habitats and wildlife across the Peak District by planting the trees in designated areas. The project has recently begun and so far has a tree nursery at 10 Trees garden in Bamford with plans for two more across the valley. Watch their new video to find out more about the project. Come along with your bike, collect some seeds and get involved in regenerating the Peak District!
When: Meet at 10:00am, with the cycle setting off shortly afterwards.
