S33 Car Club

The S33 Car Club aims to help drivers get where they need to go without the cost and hassle of owning a vehicle.

If you are a driver who either:

  • has, or is thinking about getting, a second car;
  • doesn’t own a car but who occasionally needs one to reach certain places,
  • wants to reduce costs or generate a modest income, or
  • wants to reduce your environmental impact

then this scheme will be of particular interest to you!

The S33 Car Club helps you share cars with friends and neighbours in your local community. Using the Hiyacar platform, you can find and book cars in your area, or put your own vehicle up for hire easily and safely. The club is a ‘closed’ system only available to residents in the local area. Insurance and breakdown cover are included in the package.

Moving Together

Why

  • Make money: If you have a vehicle (often a second or third car) that spends most of its time parked up slowly depreciating, you could be putting it to better use and generating an income by letting others hire it.
  • Save money: If you’re considering a vehicle purchase but don’t make a lot of trips, or you have multiple cars, it could be a lot cheaper to hire someone else’s car as and when you need one, rather than have the expense of buying and operating another vehicle yourself
  • Reach places: Access to a car helps you reach the places that otherwise would be difficult to get to by public transport or walking and cycling
  • Carry stuff: Sometimes you need a different type of vehicle, for example a van to carry an occasional bulky load. A car club can help you choose from a variety of vehicle types for those difficult trips.
  • Reduce your impact: hiring a car instead of owning one is more likely to reduce emissions, reduces the energy and materials that go into making more cars, and reduces the numbers of cars using and parked on the streets.

Who

People who will be particularly interested include:

  • Second car owners: second (or third) cars are often less frequently used, and spend a lot of their time parked up, whilst costing their owners money in depreciation and maintenance. It’s cheaper and often easier to hire other cars instead.
  • Low-mileage drivers: owning a car can be an expensive luxury if you usually travel infrequently or for short distances, although you may need a car to reach the places you want to go to. With the S33 car club you can ditch the ownership and expense but maintain the convenience of car access
  • Drivers without cars: if you can drive but can’t afford to own and operate a car, the S33 Car Club can give you access to a vehicle when you need one, without all the costs
  • Altruists: if you want to give up car ownership to benefit the environment and your community but might need occasional access to hard-to-reach destinations, the S33 car club offers the ideal solution

Renters need to be:

  • 21-75 years old (if over 25 need a full licence for a least a year)
  • Have fewer than 7 points on their licence (if between 21 – 24, must be 0 points)

Owners may be private individuals or groups of people operating as a community car club..

Vehicles can be cars or vans, but not people carriers/minibuses >9 seats. Vehicles must be under 15 years old and <insurance group 31.

Where

  • The S33 car club is for residents in the S33 postcode area, including Castleton, Hope, Bamford, Bradwell and Edale.

What

The car club needs:

  • Vehicles registered on the system by their owners for hire to local residents
  • People wanting to hire them

Car clubs work best when there are enough vehicles on offer and people wanting to use them, although they can work very well when shared by just a handful of friends or neighbours. However, residents’ car clubs like this are a relatively new and unfamiliar concept for most people, so it may take a little time to build up enough regular users. So don’t be put off if there’s no vehicle near you at the moment – go and encourage your friends and neighbours to host a vehicle instead.

How it Works

  • Hiyacar is a reputable, trusted platform to enable easy and safe sharing of vehicles between individuals. The S33 Car Club has been set up as a closed group only open to local residents in the S33 postcode area, rather than the general public, giving you that extra reassurance. In reality, vehicles are likely to be used by the same small group of people who will soon get to know each other.
  • Hiyacar’s system takes care of the administration and provides peace of mind for users, including:
    • insurance and breakdown cover for the time the vehicles are being used
    • checks and verifications on drivers and vehicles
    • booking system
    • entry to the vehicle
  • Vehicles can be cars or vans, but not people carriers/minibuses with more than 9 seats. Vehicles need to be less than 15 years old and less than insurance group 31.
  • The system works through a downloadable app, where you can set up your profile and verification of your eligibility, and owners describe their vehicles. Once listed, hirers can use the app to book vehicles.
  • Hiyacar also offer options for business pool car operation and making fleets available to the public outside office hours, and car clubs for new developments.

How to sign up

  • Sign up to Hiyacar here, then email Hiyacar support at support@hiyacar.co.uk asking to be part of the S33 car club and for any local discounts to be applied.
  • Hosts could be able to claim a discount on the keyless entry technology
  • Drivers can get £20 off your first booking using the discount code BUXTON&HOPE20
  • Download the app, and set up a free profile for either owner or hirer. Owners can also register through the web.

Owners will need to provide:

  • Contact details and photograph
  • Address
  • Driving licence
  • Insurance details
  • Vehicle details
  • Vehicle availability, terms of use (eg mileage cap) and price

Hiyacar will undertake verification checks on the vehicle, MoT, insurance and licence holder. This usually costs £9.50, but Hiyacar are providing an incentive of free sign up, using this QR code.

The owner then books an induction by phone, and can arrange to have Quickstart keyless technology installed for remote pick ups (the alternative is an in-person handover of the key) The owner must have two central locking keys, one of which is altered. This uses secure virtual keys in the app to unlock cars via a box under the dash. Virtual keys are stored in the app and deleted after each hire. The QuickStart box has GPS and can remote-lock vehicles, so Hiyacar owners stay in control. Hiyacar keep an eye on the car at all times, and owners set their own hire times and prices. All changes are reversible and do not affect warranties or insurance. Quickstart normally costs the owner £180 (£30 initially, then £15/month), but Hiyacar are offering an incentive for uptake with Moving Together of two free installations / quarter.

The price consists of the rental fee (70% if an AA business breakdown policy is purchased for £40 to cover rentals, or 60% if using Hiyacar’s breakdown policy), booking fee (10%) and insurance (20%). Hiyacar insurance over-rides the owners insurance for the period of the rental, and does not affect the owner’s personal insurance in any way, but should check with their insurers if in doubt.

How to rent your vehicle out

Vehicles can be cars or vans, but not people carriers/minibuses >9 seats. They need to be less than 15 years old and <insurance group 31.

Hosts control whether to accept or decline booking requests, and can limit availability to a closed group of trusted drivers if desired (email Hiyacar to set this up), or use an auto-accept function. The app can be set up to accept all request, or give an hour to respond after which the request goes to other owners in the area.

All drivers are vetted, verified and reviewed and all bookings are comprehensively insured and covered by roadside assistance.

The owners cover vehicle maintenance costs and should ensure the vehicle is in road-worthy condition.

The location and use of the vehicle is tracked by GPS.

Payment occurs 3-5 days after the rental.

If any damage has occurred, Hiyacar insurance can repair or offer money for a write-off. The owner can lodge a claim for fuel if not topped up.

The owner then gives a score for the renter.

How to hire a vehicle

Renters  need to be:

  • 21-75 years old (if over 25 need a full licence for a least a year)
  • Fewer than 7 points on the licence (if between 21 – 24, must be 0 points)

Renters will normally need to be within a mile walk of the owner’s vehicle.

They get a local incentive of £20 off first booking with the voucher codes BUXTON & HOPE20.

They can search for suitable vehicles from a list or map, and request to book by the hour or day. When the request has been accepted, the renter can pick the vehicle up using the Quickstart access key less than 10 minutes before the booking, and use it. A phone signal is required for Quickstart in order to open the vehicle, but not to drive it; otherwise manual handover of the key is required. No-shows are penalised.

Photos of the inside and outside the car can be taken in the app, in case of any damage, before and after use. Renters can register and drive the same day, all trips fully insured and covered by roadside assistance.

The renter takes a photo of the fuel gauge at the start, and should top up the tank to the same level at the end. If a mileage cap is exceeded, the renter is charged 25p/mile extra.

If the renter incurs a fine, Hiyacar can deal with this by nominating the driver on the government website.

The renter then gives a score to the owner.
