Tree Planting at Mam Tor

Volunteers needed to plant trees

We have a tree planting event coming up soon at Knowlegates Farm below Mam Tor on the 25th to 27th November. We will be planting a 600m2 Miyawaki Forest alongside approximately 600m2 of conventional woodland. We would love for you, friends, family, colleagues to help. It would be really helpful if you can register for the event using this link :  Tree Planting at Knowlegates Farm, Castleton Tickets, Fri 25 Nov 2022 at 10:00 | Eventbrite  so we can get an idea of numbers to expect but we won’t turn you away!

We know that woodland creation is a very effective way of sequestering carbon but we don’t know what difference the various planting techniques make. This is an experimental planting to compare the relative effectiveness of two different methods of planting. The Miyawaki method is a very dense woodland of native trees and shrubs which we will be comparing with the more conventional planting on an adjacent plot. Researchers will monitor the two plots to see how they cope with our changing climate. Tea, coffee, cake and equipment will be provided. You just need to turn up with gloves and a spade and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy.

Knowlegates Farm is just off the old Mam Tor road. The post code is S33 8WA. If it is dry there will be parking on site otherwise just park on the road.

We have another tree planting event on the Eastern Moors area on the 15th of January. Details to follow in the December newsletter but please put it in your diary now.
